One of the breakout stories in San Francisco rock last year was that of Mikal Cronin, a longtime pal of local garage-rocker Ty Segall, whose debut album blew us -- and lots of others -- away. Well, it looks like Cronin's tuneful songwriting made its way into the ears of some folks over at vaunted indie label Merge Records, because he just signed with them for a sophomore record due out next year.

This signing is kind of a big deal. Merge is one of the powerhouse labels of indie rock, home to celebrated artists like the Arcade Fire, Dinosaur Jr., the Mountain Goats, and the Magnetic Fields. It hasn't been known for putting out a whole lot of Bay Area talent, at least lately. But that's just another testament to the quality of Cronin's debut.

The label announced the signing in a brief release today:

"Cronin has released this official statement concerning his recent signing with Merge, 'YYYYYEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!'"

Cronin has been touring with Ty Segall's band and performing on his own all year. Merge says he'll play the label's festival at SXSW in March. You can check out Cronin's music over at Bandcamp.
