Outside Lands Festival Wants to Expand, Stay Through 2021

Good news for fans of Outside Lands: The city of S.F. is considering a contract extension that would keep the music festival in Golden Gate Park until 2021, and would allow even more people to attend.

This year, Outside Lands grew to 65,000 people per day. But the three-day festival hopes to expand to 75,000 as it negotiates a new contract with the city. That's still smaller than other Golden Gate Park festivals, like Hardly Strictly Bluegrass.

According to the Examiner, Another Planet Entertainment, the local company that produces Outside Lands, has proposed to direct even more revenue from the festival to the city's Rec and Parks Department. The department got roughly $1.7 million from the festival this year, and has taken in more than $6 million over the festival's four years.

Chances are that the new contract will get approved. An S.F. State study found that the festival bought in $60 million to local businesses. And festival organizers noted that 15,000 tickets to this year's festival were sold to people who live in the three zip codes surrounding the park.

Packing sardines is nothing new,

just like the plague has always been the plague.

It's already WAY too overcrowded. If they expand to allow more people then there needs to be more space too. They should also make it a camping festival.

Sure. Now if they would only make it reasonably priced (great festival, horribly overpriced in this day and age), it might bring in even more money. But, some people are just too ignorant to see a trade-off of ticket price for attendance can actually raise profits overall.

Sure, it's smaller than Hardly Strictly, but that's not saying much. They have more stages and it is a huge cluster, as anyone can tell you. Im not sure the stages at OSL in their current versions could handle more people -- look at the Sutro stage and the Alabama Shakes debacle
