The Top Five Parties This Weekend: Warm Leatherette, 120 Minutes, New York Night Train, and More

Jonathan Toubin Brings the Soul to Great American Music Hall on Sunday
That's it folks, it's over. Burning Man 2012 came and went much the way it has every year. Life, however, goes on. This might be easy to forget while you lose yourself un-glueing things from the hood of your Toyota. But since research suggests that such activity has the potential to permanently hypnotize, we advise you snap out of it. Here are our top five events to help you slowly adjust back to reality. Read on -- your weekend awaits.

5. Warm Leatherette presents 3 Years of Dark Entries @ SUB/Mission
Saturday, Sept. 8, 10 p.m. - 2 a.m.

Every couple weeks there's a Saturday evening dedicated to the dark and hidden side of synthesis. Warm Leatherette is said party, and though we've told you about it many times before, this month marks the passage of an important anniversary. But while many clubs tend to celebrate their own anniversaries, this time around Warm Leatherette is honoring the third year of Dark Entries Records. Run by local enthusiast Josh Cheon, the label's prolific discography of re-issues, compilations, and inspired originals has been at least partly responsible for the revival of interest in this obscure side of '80s dance. To commemorate the moment, Cheon will be on deck spinning selections from his private archive. Check out this mix of Dark Entries artists (assembled by Bezier of Break-Up Records), for a taste of what to expect. Also on hand for the night will be Dark Entries-affiliated artist Max + Mara, the new duo featuring Mara of dark synth project Group Rhoda and Max of the industrial-leaning Brotman and Short.

4. 120 Minutes 2nd Anniversary Party w/ Mascara & oOoOO @ Elbo Room
Friday, Sept. 7, 10 p.m. - 2 a.m.

Tequila and wheatgrass, peanut butter and mayonnaise, cilantro and Nutella -- give us a minute and we can rattle off a few more combinations that just shouldn't work together. Monthly party 120 Minutes riffs off this concept by bending the fabric of the universe to provide a space for people into both gothic soundscapes and codeine-laced hip-hop. And before you have a chance to think its just a fad, let us just slide in casually and let you know that this Friday marks 120 Minutes' second year as a part of the greater landscape of San Francisco nightlife. To celebrate year number two, the party is going back to its roots with sets by drag (the musical genre, not the crossdressing) pioneer oOoOO and NYC witch house DJ Mascara. As usual, hosts/resident DJs S4NtA_MU3rTE, Chauncey_CC, and Nako will bring "darkness and insanity"-provoking tunes, set to Future Weapons' "facemelting laser show."

3. MIGHTY Real Presents Sunset Ritual w/ Louie & Anane Vega @ Mighty
Saturday, Sept. 8, 10 p.m. - 4 p.m.

What would a weekend in San Francisco be without a solid night of house music? This Saturday, Mighty's thundering RLA soundsystem will be taken over by the husband-and-wife duo of Louie and Anane Vega. Together they make up Sunset Ritual, a "conceptual beach party" normally held in warm oceanside clubs like the Le Beach Club Sea Loune in Corsica, Cavo Paradiso in Mykonos, and the Blue Marlin in Ibiza. Uniting all of these venues is the shared musical spirit of the duo, which goes deep into the heart of New York house music with tinges of Anane's South African roots and Louie's now-famous Latin style (after all, he is one-half of Masters at Work). As usual, David Harness will warm up the horns and subwoofers with an early set. Check out our write-up of the last time Louie Vega was at Mighty to understand why this is one you shouldn't miss.
