What ISAM looks like onstage.
Ambitious sound nerd Amon Tobin had already put together a real retina-dazzler with the original tour supporting his latest album, ISAM. The S.F.-based electronic artist hired a bunch of computer whizzes and production veterans to build a custom 3-D installation and projection setup, leading to visuals that blew a lot of minds while echoing the complex textures of his new music.

But since many electronic types are doing projection onto three-dimensional surfaces in their live shows these days, Tobin has upped the ante with ISAM 2.0. The new show promises even more audio and visual enhancements, as well as a peek at the new stuff Tobin is doing with his more beat-focused project, Two Fingers (with Joe "Doubleclick" Chapman). And to make things extra special for the hometown crowd, Tobin's bringing out the lauded Kronos Quartet for his show at Berkeley's Greek Theatre on Oct. 5.

The opening performance by Kronos Quartet is one-night-only, just for the Bay Area, and isn't the first time Tobin will have worked with the group. The quartet contributed to Tobin's album Foley Room, and even recast his music for the 20th anniversary box set of Tobin's label, Ninja Tune. Seeing them onstage one after another should be really interesting (and maybe jarring): The leap from string quartet to 3-D video/artist-hiding-in-a-cube-for-most-of-the-show/spacey projections seems quite large.
