In a string of Tweets this morning, Girls singer Christopher Owens announced that he's leaving the band he started with bassist and producer J.R. White, apparently bringing to an end one of San Francisco's most fruitful indie rock partnerships.

"I am leaving Girls," Owens tweeted. "My reasons at this time are personal. I need to do this in order to progress."

Owens said he would continue making music, but did not say whether Girls would end. There has been no word from White about Owens departure. Owens left a similar statement on the website of the band's label, True Panther Sounds:

Dear all,

This may come as a surprise to many & has been an issue of much thought for me. My decision was not easy to make.

I am leaving Girls. My reasons at this time are personal. I need to do this in order to progress.

I will continue to write & record music. More will be announced soon. I thank you all for everything.

Sincerely-Christopher

As we've noted many times on this blog, the collaboration between Owens and White yielded some of the most memorable and emotionally piercing indie rock being made anywhere. Last year's Father, Son, Holy Ghost, Girls second album, earned the band broad acclaim from critics who praised Owens' tuneful songwriting and nakedly straightforward lyrics.

We'll update this post if we hear more about what's going on with Owens and Girls.
