Two Gallants: Tyson Vogel and Adam Haworth Stephens

Two Gallants, the beloved S.F. roots duo of Tyson Vogel and Adam Stephens, is back: After a three-year hiatus that saw both members release solo albums -- plus a few reunion shows, including two at this year's Noise Pop festival -- the pair are putting out a new album this fall entitled The Bloom and the Blight, and have put up a new song from the album, "Broken Eyes," for free download. The new, John Congleton-produced album will be the band's first full-length since 2007's self-titled LP.

The new music finds Two Gallants moving away from the anguished blues of their earlier work in favor of a somewhat more relaxed Americana. They haven't quite gone soft: There's a pinched quality to Stephens' vocals that contributes an urgency to almost anything he sings, even on some of the more relaxed and smoothly produced songs from his solo album, We Live on Cliffs. With the simplicity of its lyrical structure, "Broken Eyes" feels -- as does some of the best of Two Gallants work -- like some lost tune song from the early part of the 20th Century. With two voices, harmonica, guitar, and tambourine, the arrangement is very simple, and its old-timey-ness could be, depending on your perspective, a bit much. But then, old-timey-ness has always been a crucial quality of Two Gallants, and it's feeling the band often excels at drawing out. Hear and download "Broken Eyes" after the jump.

Two Gallants perform at the Outside Lands festival Aug. 10. The Bloom and the Blight is out on ATO Records Sept. 4.
