Watch: Exray's Make a Vintage Sci-Fi Dystopia for "Ancient Thing" Video

Categories: Video

Shot on grainy Super-8, in what appears to be the industrial flats of Oakland and, later, some dilapidated agricultural building, Exray's new video might at first seem like another indie spin through nostalgialand. But actually it's far weirder: There's a robot -- or maybe it's some mechanical creature of alien origin -- wandering around aimlessly, looking for who knows what, discovering a strange box that turns out to be a tape player. The bare hills in the background and the crumbling metal sides of the building appear foreboding, suggesting a lost Earth where our confused protagonist is the only bipod left.

Like the Oakland duo's music, the video (which was jointly produced by the band's own Jon Bernson and Michael Falsetto-Mapp, along with Kyle Giacomo and Pixar's Jeanne Applegate) suggests both the past and the future at the same time, an apocalypse viewed through the grainy distortion of film, a synth-pop with a distinctly analog character. What the clip for "Ancient Thing" may lack in overt narrative, it more than compensates for in mood. The clip premiered on IFC today; check it out after the jump.
