The Voice Finale: Dear TV-Watching America, Chris Mann Is Too Dull Even For You

Categories: Television

chris-mann-voice.jpg
Chris Mann: Capable singer, flavorless contestant.
Granted, the show is called The Voice, thus emphasizing contestants' ability to sing; and granted, Chris Mann can expertly render notes given to him on a sheet of music, which many others (probably including his coach, Christina Aguilera) can't do as well; and granted, Mann's Vanderbilt training and opera experience may lend this enjoyable contrivance of a television program some new credibility; and granted, he did make your mom cry with that whole "Ave Maria" performance. But, dear, The Voice-watching America, there is something Chris Mann doesn't have, and it is kind of important:

Personality.

Maybe if he didn't look like the Google image search result of "white guy," or if he didn't dress like an ambitious third-year law student, or if he didn't sing in the most Ivory soap-scrubbed vocal tone -- or, hell, if he had just not chosen a Coldplay song as his one attempt to demonstrate hipness -- it would be possible, or even forgivable, to like Chris Mann, and to wish him victory tonight when the show concludes. But currently, America, it is not. Not even for you.

I know that a sad and fearful part of your heart just wants to drive a champagne-colored Toyota Camry, eat bland Fettucine Alfredo from a $9.99 buffet, and let flat, piano-driven ballads stand in the place of potentially surprising music. But, America -- and I say this as a reticent and conflicted but ultimately optimistic fan of yours -- Chris Mann is not a good look. He embodies the sad preference of undeniable merit over undeniable character, of safety over excitement, of the past over the future. He's a great singer and he comes off just fine in a suit and tie, but as potential music reality show winners go, he's like wearing a grey sweater vest to the club on a Saturday night. You look good in color, America -- and that's another thing Chris Mann doesn't have.

Apparently in America if you're not in-your-face, loud-mouthed, trash-talking, making sure everyone you meet knows every detail about your personal tragedies, you have "no personality." Don't get me wrong. I LOVE those people.  But I like this guy, too. "Diversity" doesn't mean "everyone's whacky."  Frankly, whacky is getting overplayed.  Sometimes I want to try to tell people, as politely as I can manage, "I'm sorry, but I'm starting to get bored with how interesting you are."

Everybody who criticizes this guy makes no effort to see what he has done before The Voice... he has songs out on iTunes that are not opera.  He did a cover of George Michael's "I want your sex" and a cover of Kanye's "Heartless".  I originally found out about him when he sang on a back to school ad for Office Max.  There are plenty of you tube performances that show a range of genres.  He has worked with Babyface, Richard Marx, David Foster, etc... even India Aire who has tweeted about his work on The Voice.   He is a passionate guy still trying to make his way in the industry.  I just wish all the hot air bags that are able to spew their moronic, unresearched opinions would do a little more groundwork.  If you don't like him, don't vote or don't watch... either way, he has you all talking about him, doesn't he?

The name of the show is "The Voice", not "The Race" or "The Stereotype". Whether wearing a tuxedo, an intergallactic dress or a marriage between "White Collar" and "Psych", it is about the "Voice". While all contestants have their merits, most stayed within one type of music while Chris was comfortable with different ones, easily and beautifully waltzing from "La Dolce Vitta" to "Ave Maria". Be honest for once: how many can do that?

I think you should do a bit more research on Chris Mann. What's dull is this article.

I am not sure it's even worth commenting on this  silly and extremelly  unsophisticated article! But since I am totally crazy by this genre of music, and love Chris Mann colours,my only comment is: HE IS A FINALIST, CHOSEN BY THEVIEWERS, and AMERICANS VOTED FOR HIM! Hello…!!!!!!!

Well, you can have an opinion & so can I! Obviously, you don't appreciate a truly talented Voice, that's ok... those of us watching the show for talent 'get' him. Clearly, he sings the best of the final 4. Maybe more popular (we don't know yet who has won) but Chris is the one who can sing anything! I'm pretty sure he made it into the final 4 because he was voted to be there, he has talent and obviously a lot of the public are loving listening to him share that talent! He's too dull for you, that's probably because you've only seen a small portion of what Chris can do, so he chose to dress like a classy man while on the show... ummm, what's wrong with that?!

Oh, one last thing... ever hear of Josh Groban? He and Chris have similar training ~ well, in case you don't know who Josh is, he has been around for 10+ years and has sold almost 25 MILLION albums. I'm quite certain that Chris is capable of doing the same! I'm not so sure any of the other 3 will be able to do that but hey, this is all just my opinion.

Rubbish! He became one of the 4 finalists because the voters love him.

You are totally ignorant & WAY off base on your analysis of Chris Mann.  You see him on stage for 3 minutes every 1-2 times a month and you say he has no personality?  Jump to wrong conclusions much?  Can't wait in the future when Chris Mann has an opportunity to show his true personality and you'll be eating your words.  Do your homework & be a responsible journalist for once.

Isn't complaining that a contestant on 'The Voice' isn't edgy or colorful enough a lot like bitching that your TGI Friday's waitress isn't wearing enough flare?

Yeah, I don't get this write-up either.  Talent is talent regardless what you wear or look like.  If you can sing nobody notices what you're wearing or what color you are anyways.

Wow.  He shouldn't win because he's white and doesn't look like every other contestant?  He should be judged not by merit but by the color of his skin?  When do classically trained musicians ever win popular contests - is that not different?  What an epically racist FAIL.
