Remember Elastica? It was a '90s Britpop band that lacked some of the arrogance of Blur and, uh, well, all of the arrogance of Oasis, and maybe its tunes didn't quite have the working-class angst and hyperliterate despair of Pulp. But Elastica wrote some great, memorable songs and got lots of attention for them. The band, which was led by beautiful singer Justine Frischmann, even filmed the video for "Stutter" right here in San Francisco.

We'd heard that Frischmann was now living up in Marin County, and this week, art website In the Make provided photographic evidence. The site, which documents artists in their studios, took a tour of Frischmann's Marin home and painting studio, and posted an interesting interview and lots of gorgeous photos.

Among the best parts of the interview are where Frischmann discusses what she listens to while she paints -- still the Fall and Wire, but also "Brian Eno, some Krautrock, Battles, Dusseldorf, Hatchback." And she says she's "been wary of using my success in music to ask for opportunities [she] might not be ready for." Frischmann, who has a degree in architecture, was preparing for a show in New York that begins tomorrow, assembling bright, heavily geometric compositions made partly with acrylics, latex, and spray paint. Her work is definitely very colorful. (You can check out more photos at In the Make.) So, anyone who's wondering what happened to Elastica's singer now that the band is defunct, here's your answer: She's living in a remodeled Eichler in the ultrapleasant environs of Marin, making visual art.
