Weekend Parties: 120 Minutes at Elbo Room, Blow Up at DNA Lounge, Kontrol at Endup, and More
|Lady Tragik plays Elbo Room on Friday|
Friday, Jan. 6
What: 120 Minutes Rap Party featuring Lady Tragik
Where: Elbo Room
When: 10 p.m. - 2 a.m.
Why: Back again for its first party of the new year, 120 Minutes returns with a special edition dedicated to rap. This comes as little surprise considering that the party's DJs have been mixing hip-hop and darker-hued rap sounds into their playlists for the better part of the last year. Headlining this special edition is L.A.-based rapper and multi-disciplinary artist Lady Tragik. A relatively new voice on the scene, her work with producer Stylo has led to a host of underground LGBT anthems such as "Dirty Bitch," "Hollywood," and "Man on the Moon." As always, visuals will be provided by the inimitable Future Weapons, while DJ support comes courtesy of S4NtA_MU3rTE, Nako, and GuMMyBeAR.
What: Blow Up NYE Redo Party
Where: DNA Lounge
When: 10 p.m. - 2 a.m.
Why: Hopefully you had a good time on New Year's Eve. But if your December 31 was less than spectacular, Blow Up is offering you a chance at a do-over. This Friday the well-established force in the city's 18+ scene is throwing a make-up New Year's Eve party complete with a countdown to midnight, champagne (for those old enough), confetti, and all the other appropriate accoutrements. In addition, the party's Facebook page promises "special performances and surprises." No word yet on what that might entail but don't worry, the announced entertainment for the evening comes courtesy of Relax, Relate, Release's Vin Sol and Blow Up's own Jeffrey Paradise. Remember, it's a New Year;s Eve do-over, so be sure to wear proper attire.
Saturday, Jan. 7
What: Kontrol with Mayaan Nidam & Axel Boman
Where: The Endup
When: 10 p.m. - 6 a.m.
Why: Located at the historic Endup, Kontrol is San Francisco's local hub for the global techno scene. This month, the party stays close to its roots by offering two of Europe's rising stars. A resident of Berlin, Mayaan Nidam has built a name for herself with the releases of her idiosyncratic discography. Working with labels like Wolf + Lamb, Freak 'N Chic, and Contexterrior, she specializes in a sound that's sassy and bass heavy. Check out "Feels Like," Don't Know Why," and You Break Me." Joining Nidam for the evening is Sweden's Axel Boman, who has one of the most tongue-in-cheek DJ bios we've ever seen. This playful spirit is also heard in his music; get an idea by listening to tracks "Purple Drank," "Arcimboldo," and "Europa." Rounding out the bill are Kontrol residents Sammy D and Nikola Baytala.
What: Haceteria featuring Alexis Blair Penney
Where: Deco Lounge
When: 9 p.m. - 3 a.m.
Why: Haceteria is one of the best spots in the city for industrial, New Beat, and classic house sounds. This month the party is planning something special in the form of a live performance by Alexis Blair Penney. Known for her wild Tuesday night party High Fantasy, Penney is also an accomplished singer with a complex stage presence reminiscent of David Bowie and the gender-bending characters in Liquid Sky. To get an idea of her music, listen to "Lonely Sea (Ecstacy Mix)," "Wichita Lineman," and "Like the Devil." As always, DJ support comes by way of Haceteria residents Tristes Tropiques, Nihar, Smac, and Jason P.
