Tonight: Live Electronic Project Magic Touch Headlines a Free New Party at SF Underground
If you didn't lose your fucking mind amid the flurry of end-of-year lists clogging the Internet last month, you might remember our wrap-up of the best Bay Area electronic records of 2011. Tonight, one of the artists who made that list, Magic Touch, is playing the very first installment of a new free party at SF Underground, an oft-neglected little dance club in the Lower Haight.
Called Push the Feeling, the monthly party is a new effort by Epicsauce DJ and local show promoter Kevin Meenan to broaden the appeal of the dance party: "Aiming to make this an unpretentious, dancey affair that can appeal to both folks who frequent the city's more house/boogie/disco-centric parties and those more accustomed to seeing live bands or hanging at dive bars," he says.
Magic Touch is a good pick to headline the first edition: It's the project of Damon Palermo, drummer/rhythm-machine programmer of the local space-rock-turned-electronic project Mi Ami. "I Can Feel the Heat," at standout track from Palermo's 100% Silk debut, announces its presence with a barrage of repeating vocal and sax samples, but stretches out into a more spacious groove -- and what sounds like some wild '80s guitar work -- as its seven minutes go by:
Palermo is performing live tonight at Push the Feeling, so you can expect to see him drag out all the toys he uses to make his music. And along with Magic Touch, tonight's lineup features DJ sets from Meenan himself and YR Skull, a local production project that's one-half of the vocal electronic duo Silver Hands. The party starts at 9, and it's free with a Facebook RSVP.
