Awful news out of Oakland last night: Eight people, including a 1-year-old boy, were assailed with more than 50 bullets outside of a liquor store in a shooting nobody can quite explain yet.

Initial reports suggested that the crowd was shooting a music video on Willow Street with the Oakland rapper Kafani. But Kafani denied this, writing on his Twitter feed, "News reports wrong I did not shoot a video today." He says that while there was a promo van present at the scene with his picture on it -- and that the group was apparently working on a clip for him -- the rapper wasn't personally there.

The one-year-old who was shot, Hiram Lawrence, underwent overnight surgery at Highland Hospital to relieve swelling on his brain, according to news reports. The others injured are in stable condition.

Kafani told reporters that Lawrence was his cousin's son. His cousin "had his son in his hands, and somebody started shooting ... I think the bullet that hit him in the hand is what hit his son in the head."

Kafani also said that young Lawrence and his father were a regulars at Kafani's studio sessions.

Kafani calls himself Da Ice King and has won national exposure with songs like "Fast (Like A Nascar)" and "She Ready Now," as well as a beef he had earlier this year with Berkeley rapper Lil B. After several tweets about last night's shooting, Kafani returned this morning to promoting his new single, "Knock 'Em Down":
