Weekend Party Preview: Mad Professor at Dubapalooza, RedLine and Non-Stop Bhangra Anniversaries, and More

Mad Professor is a Dubapalooza this Friday

This weekend a large, organized mob will occupy Treasure Island. But unlike some other occupations going on in the country, this one is in the name of music -- the annual Treasure Island Music Festival arrives this Saturday and Sunday. The festival is an obvious highlight of the weekend, but don't let it steal your attention away from the action happening in the city proper. In particular, this weekend's offerings include two high profile anniversaries and a unique opportunity to take in the full spectrum of bass music in a single evening. Read on for the full scoop.

Friday, October 14

What: Dubapalooza feat. Mad Professor, Kingdom, Brenmar, Round Table Knights, and More
Where: 1015 Folsom
When: 9 p.m. - 4 a.m.
Why: It's going to be a huge party with a common theme of heavy bass. Headlining the event is second-wave dub producer Mad Professor. Known for his collaborative works -- which have featured such diverse figures as Lee "Scratch" Perry, Massive Attack, and Sade -- the Professor specializes in a kind of updated and digitized dub music that has been highly influential in the recent evolutions of the genre. Check out this video of him dubbing it up in his studio. Joining the bill in the upstairs Lights Down Low room is a trio of some of the most influential artists in bass music today. Check out Kingdom's recent single "Take Me feat. Naomi Allen," Brenmar's "Taking it Down," and Round Table Knights' remix of Beni's "It's a Bubble."

What: RedLine 5 Year Anniversary
Where: Mighty
When: 9 p.m. - 4 a.m.
Why: If you find yourself wanting for the comforting rumble of sub bass, this is the spot for a fix. RedLine, one of the city's longest running dubstep production crews, is celebrating its fifth anniversary with a massive party featuring a roster of artists that reaches into the double digits. Check out this recent RedLine mix for an idea of the vibe. If that's not enough to win you over, the group's Facebook page says it'll have "The Happy High Herb Shop" vendor on hand. We're not sure what that means exactly, but the description seems broadly applicable and more than a little instructive: "No hangovers. No comedowns. No sad face!"

Saturday, October 15

What: Haçeteria presents Roche and Claude Lévi
Where: Deco Lounge
When: 9 p.m. - 3 a.m.
Why: Haçeteria is quickly becoming the go-to party for music on the weirder side of the dance music spectrum. This month's edition is no different, with two special guests drawn from the local dance music landscape. Roche is an up and coming producer of nostalgia-tinged house music with roots in the jackin' sound of '80s Chicago. Check out Roche's SoundCloud. Similarly, local producer Claude Lévi (the absurdly meta alias of DJ Tristes Tropiques) promises to continue in the '80s Chicago vein with a debut live set of vintage techno compositions that will "take you on an atmospheric journey through time and space." You'll have plenty of time to enjoy that journey as the party now makes full use of the Deco's afterhours license: this one'll go till 3 a.m.

What: Non-Stop Bhangra 7 Year Anniversary
Where: Rickshaw Stop
When: 9 p.m. - 3 a.m.
Why: Going on seven years now, Non-Stop Bhangra (the party, dance-troupe, and instructional entity) has been one of the city's most fervent promoters of the hybrid sound of Bhangra. Coming from London, the style fuses together traditional Punjabi sounds with the blaring beat of hip-hop and the manic toasting of dancehall. Now celebrating its seventh anniversary, the party honors the meeting of the East and West Indies by bringing aboard Dub Mission resident DJ Sep as well as Chicago-based DJ/Dhol player Rav-E. For an idea of what to expect, check out their recent presentation at TED.
