Today Is Jimi Hendrix Day in S.F.: Here Are Six Great Hendrix Songs

hendrix-day-sf.jpg
By decree of your San Francisco City Supervisors and the executors of the Jimi Hendrix Estate, today, Sept. 13, is officially Jimi Hendrix-Winterland Day in San Francisco.

The resolution, approved late last month by the Supes, cites the late guitar genius for the post-Summer of Love shows he played at the onetime legendary S.F. Winterland Ballroom, the six shows he played there after the recording of Electric Ladyland (Hendrix's final album with the Experience), and in general as a "symbol of the ingenuity and experimentation that San Francisco prizes." [Full text after the jump if you're curious.]

There will be a celebration of the man tonight at Amoeba music, where Janie Hendrix (Jimi's Sister) and funk master Bootsy Collins will be meeting and greeting Hendrix fans in honor of today's release of a new four-disc, Hendrix at Winterland box set. The party goes down at 7 p.m.

Whether you can make it or not, join us in a brief, six-song celebration of Hendrix after the jump.

Here's the full text of the Supervisors' proclamation on Hendrix-Winterland Day:

Many Thanks to all who Continue to Burn the Midnight Lamp!as a Watcher of the Flame, i can only express my thoughts in Music,Video Post and the Written Word, which are the most Powerful Mediums in the World. Just stop for a Second and think, what would Jimi do at this Point in the American Uprising? what song comes to mind? i could come up with a few Choice Ones, but the one that Stands Out in the Uprisings Around The World Is, EARTH BLUES!!! its Coming Like a Freight Train,as Jimi Said..Somebody's House is Burning...and so we need Love!Love!Love! but we better hope it Come's Before This Summer. Jimi's Music no doubt was a real trip to the Outer Limits, yet kept it real, though many are still trying to figure the meaning of Songs like ,Third Stone From The Sun???Anywho's all i can say is, Play on my Brothers/Sisters,as we see the Tide of Revolution Approaching, Let us Remember Who We Are??? ,We Are Americans,We Are One,We're Lost In Music,Caught in The Trap of American Dream, a Dream That in Reality was,a Nightmare That Has Been Quietly Unfolding Until This Very Moment In Our Time. How Can We As A Nation Be Free When We Must Continue To Pay Land Tax Even After Everything Is Paid Off ??? How is It That Our War Hero's Are Homeless In The Land Of The Brave? Jimi Has Come in From The Storm,Now Its Our Time To Go Through It, For Those of Us Who Will Make It Through To The Other Side, Be Sure And Leave That Midnight Lamp On, So That Others Might Crossover The Rainbow Bridge!!!..ER.
