Jeff Tweedy Covers (and Mocks) the Black Eyed Peas; Wilco Drops New "Born Alone" Video

"This has been very challenging": Tweedy covering the Black Eyed Peas
Check it: New Wilco album (The Whole Love, out Sept. 27) means new Wilco video (for "Born Alone"), means new Wilco tour (alas, no Bay Area dates yet.)

But the best of today's Wilco developments is a video captured of Jeff Tweedy covering the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" at a party last night in Chicago. After warning the room that his cover will suck, Tweedy picks his way through the song, laying its lamebrained repetitiveness bare with just an acoustic guitar and then reminding the audience -- which is cracking up -- which words they have to shout along to the song. It's pretty darn funny.

Tweedy also did a scathing a capella cover of the Peas' "My Humps":

These are a lot funnier than the new Wilco video for "Born Alone," which melds quickly changing shots of cool vintage stuff -- toys, band performances, guitar amplifiers, sound recording equipment -- with sped-up footage of driving down a city street under a rainy sky. Like the song itself, the video is very Wilco -- but the evocative-if-easygoing dad-rock Wilco, not the trembling with feeling, quietly intense Wilco that we prefer.

The band is set to play all over the Eastern U.S. and Europe later this year. We'll let you know if Tweedy and Co. announce any shows in our neighborhood.
