Epic or Interminable? Lou Reed and Metallica's Lulu Is Going to Be Looong
Lulu, in all her glory.
Brevity wasn't at the top of our list of expectations for this year's Lou Reed and Metallica (heretofore known as "Loutallica") album (titled Lulu), but jeez, guys, 90 minutes?
Indeed: The official tracklisting for Lulu hit the web today, and though the album only has 10 "songs," its full run time is nearly an hour and a half -- 1:27:04, to be precise.
Then again, maybe we shouldn't worry? This is going to be "the best thing done by anyone, ever" -- according to Lou Reed, anyway -- so it might as well be four hours long.
Still, when we see a tracklisting that only has two songs under five minutes -- plus two eight-minute songs, two 11-minute tracks, and one 19-minute-and-28-second mini-epic at the end, we start to worry. Hell, there are some damn fine punk bands out there whose entire discography doesn't add up to 19 minutes and 28 seconds of continuous music.
Of course, this is Loutallica, not some snotty punk band. These guys are entitled to be long-winded, and at least once were capable of it, too -- Master of Puppets doesn't have a single song under five minutes, and "Sister Ray" lasted a full 17:29.
The San Rafael-recorded Lulu could still be completely awesome when it comes out Nov. 1. And with song titles such as "Pumping Blood" and "Iced Honey" -- and that arresting cover art above -- there are a lot of reasons to be optimistic.
Here's the full tracklisting:
