Deli Radio Streams Music Based on Who's Playing in Town

Categories: Tech

Here's a sensible idea: What if there was an Internet radio station or streaming service that would play music only from bands who are performing soon in your city in the next week, two weeks, or month?

Now there is: It's called Deli Radio, and a cool, basic version of the site is up and working for free now.

Basically, Deli Radio is a free streaming service where listeners can go and create a streaming radio station of music according to a few parameters -- say, bands performing in S.F. in the next week. Then just sit back and listen while the site plays songs from the artists, shows pictures of them, and of course gives details on when and where the bands will be performing.

You can switch around the parameters to adjust your station by genre, venue, or timeframe. For listeners, this seems like a pretty handy tool -- like a concert listing site, but in audio, and with an emphasis on local bands playing local shows.

For artists, it's yet another way to get out word of shows and new music. Bands can sign up on the site for free, upload tracks, and link to their Songkick page, so their relevant tour info will show up on Deli Radio automatically. Deli Radio doesn't pay royalties for streams, but its creators are hoping that smaller bands will forego the tiny royalties they'd get from other streaming sites in order to show up in Deli stations. Soon, the site will also sell song downloads for artists.

There are a few clear issues with the site, most notably the fact that there aren't too many bands signed up yet. A search for all bands playing at Bottom of the Hill in the next two weeks turns up only two artists, for instance.

Still, Deli Radio is definitely a good idea. The site plans to roll out an iPhone app in the next week, and has other advances planned after that. Check it out and tell us what you think in the comments below.
