Techno Producer Speedy J Plays Live at Kontrol This Weekend
Dutch producer Speedy J (Jochem Paap) arrives this weekend in San Francisco to offer a rare three-hour hybrid DJ set and live performance. A colleague and former label-mate of techno luminaries such as Richie Hawtin and Aphex Twin, Speedy J's sonic musings helped lay the foundation for the more experimental side of the genre.![]()
It's been nine years since the last Speedy J album (Loudboxer) was released, but there should be glimpses of fresh tunes bubbling up throughout this weekend's performance, including a new EP called "Shoegaze," a 45-minute collection consisting of eight-plus minute variations (both minimal and driving) on a singular instrumental theme. He'll be joined by DJ sets from M. Gervais (owner of Minneapolis label Timefog) and locals Craig Kuna, Sammy D, and Nikola Baytala, the residents of the popular party "Kontrol," on Saturday, August 6 at 10 p.m. at the Endup. Admission is free before 11 p.m., and $20 after.
