Black Sabbath Is Maybe (Not!) Getting Back Together, Or Something

We're not really sure what's going on here, but something stinks.

Former Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi reportedly told the British Birmingham Mail that the original Black Sabbath lineup would be back for the first time since 1979 with a new album next year.

''It's all been very hush-hush," Iommi supposedly said. "Ozzy's been the worst at trying to hold it back. He's doing a lot of TV and he's being asked stuff about a reunion and he's going, 'Well, I never say never.'"

Big news, yes?

Well, maybe not.

The Birmingham Mail's article apparently didn't make Iommi too happy, because he posted a rather angry, yet erudite response on his website:

I'm saddened that a Birmingham journalist whom I trusted has chosen this point in time to take a conversation we had back in June and make it sound like we spoke yesterday about a Black Sabbath reunion.... Thanks to the Internet, it's gone round the world as some sort of 'official' statement on my part, absolute nonsense.

Everyone is jumping into the fray and/or bashing the British reporter, Andy Coleman -- even the L.A. Times is calling the flap a "rumor debunked."

But crucially, Iommi never actually denies any of the quotes in the Birmingham Mail -- and his statement never says Black Sabbath isn't getting back together.

This quote, from the original story, simply doesn't make any sense if Black Sabbath has no plans to reunite: ''I had umpteen number of people on the phone asking if I fancied getting together with a band, but I couldn't tell them what I was doing. I just had to say I was busy.''

It sounds to us less like this is "taken out of context" than "oops, that guy wasn't supposed to write about it." Iommi just seems pissed that some punk journalist spoiled the band's chance to make an Official Statement.

So maybe we'll be seeing Ozzy and Black Sabbath back again sometime soon? Or maybe not -- damned if we know.
