A 10th annual tribute to the late great Clash frontman Joe Strummer takes place this Saturday, Aug. 13, at S.F.'s Bottom of the Hill. While it's always a benefit for Strummerville (The Joe Strummer Foundation for New Music), this year the event doubles as a fundraiser for Save KUSF.

"It is appalling how the university pulled the rug out from under the station after 30-plus years of community service," says event organizer Mike Anguera, who says he is honored to split the proceeds between Save KUSF and Strummerville. "I did not know that this was a trend across the country until I started being enlightened by the Save KUSF website. I am really hoping KUSF can survive this and be back on air."

Anguera says this weekend was chosen to coincide with Outside Lands, where Strummer's former bandmate Mick Jones will be performing with his band Big Audio Dynamite. He has put word out to Jones about the tribute as a long-shot hope that Jones might turn up.

The evening will be accompanied by a "Clashical soundtrack" that includes live performances from Interchords, Eastern Span, the Hooks, and new all-female tribute band the Clash City Sirens. Admission for the event, which starts at 8:30 p.m., is $10.

Mick Jones did show up at the very end of the night, just a bit too late to get on stage. After spending the evening hearing some great renditions of Clash songs and thinking about how much they changed our lives, it was almost like a dream to see one of the band there.
