Tonight: See Great Local Bands, Help Indie Mart Founder Kelly Malone Battle Cancer
It would be easy enough to say, "Oh, yeah, the Sandwitches, Royal Baths, Art Museums, Carletta Sue Kay, and Social Studies are playing a gig tonight, you should go." But this is even easier, because tonight's show at the Independent is a benefit to help someone of great importance to the local scene deal with something very hard. Kelly Malone, who founded the Indie Mart and later the DIY school Workshop, has cancer. Bad. Because of the inanity of our country's healthcare system, she does not have health insurance. Tonight's event will raise money to help Malone pay for what's likely to be a costly treatment plan.

The bill has some of our favorite local musicians on it. We'd tell you to go anyway. But obviously, there's more at stake than just a solid night of musical entertainment. From the official show description:
This past April, Kelly was diagnosed with an advanced stage of cancer that had spread to nonlocalized areas as a result of previous battles. Originally dropped from her previous insurance because of the cancer diagnosis, Kelly has had no chance of obtaining new health insurance due to this pre-existing condition. Through this all, Kelly keeps a smile on her face and continues to give back to San Francisco, often devoting much of her own income and sweat to continue businesses that enrich the city. As a successful small business owner, designer, artist, event planner, part of the Treasure Island Music Festival & Noise Pop, Kelly has been able to keep up with medical bills through the ongoing treatments, surgeries, and chemotherapy schedules. But this latest diagnosis requires a treatment path that will exceed her financial abilities, and most likely require her to take a hiatus from her businesses. So she is now asking San Francisco for a helping hand.
