R.I.P. Darryl Pandy, Singer Who Helped House Music Hit the Mainstream

Darryl Pandy
Singer and Chicago house pioneer Darryl Pandy, whose incredible voice helped the burgeoning genre cross over into mainstream success, died today, according to news reports. Pandy had been seriously ill for months, leading to several benefit shows for him, according to 5 Chicago, a house music magazine.

Pandy sang the lead vocal on "Love Can't Turn Around," a track by Chicago DJ Farley Keith (aka Farley Jackmaster Funk) that gained widespread attention and chart success, and exposed many listeners to house music for the first time upon its release in 1986. The song again made the pop charts when it was rereleased in 1996.

Numerous DJs, including house godfather Jesse Saunders, noted Pandy's passing today on Twitter. His death was brought to our attention by S.F. spinner Chris Orr, who posted the following on Facebook:

RIP Darryl Pandy. This is the first house record I ever heard way back in '86. I didn't know what kind of music it was, it just sounded like Kool and the Gang colliding with New Order. Pandy had a 6 and half octave vocal range. A big man with a big voice. Rest in peace.

Feel free to leave your memories of Pandy and his music in the comments.

What incredibly sad news......................I had the pleasure of being Darryls tour managaer/Agent in the heyday when Love Cant turn Around was huge in England..We had some amazing nights and the personal Apperaances he made were unbeleivable..I an still an agent 26 years on and you just dont see this star quality ever...We had great fun on the road and as anyone knows who knew he he was a very special one off character..He will always be rememebered by me as an amazing singer..a great character and a star that never really got the recognition he craved for and most surely dserved..

R.I.P. your pal Yusef from England.

My condolences to Darryl's friends and family.  'Love  Can't Turn Around' is one of my first memories of house music.  You know he's getting the party started upstairs.

R.I.P. my childhood friend.  We went 40 years back.  I remember back in grade school, people use to actually laugh at him.  We were friends and I always knew he had a special gift.  Watching his talents from a little boy into manhood.  What marvelous thing God has done with people like Daryl.  Heaven's choir got a new lead single. They shoutin all over heaven.

From Paula Jones:  Rest in peace Metro high school friend. I will never forget you, as you did not care one iota about what folks thought about you.  Bet that none of them had the life that you made for yourself.  Miss singing with ya Darryl, and I am so glad that we got to speak with each other several years ago.

We're going to miss your over-the-top crazy-ass goofing, and of course all the outstanding music you brought over the years.  I'll always be grateful to you for bringing my first production to the Billbard Dance charts, "MOVE" on DJ International (Farmboy).  Underneath that mountain of man, the crazyness, and the shrill falsetto, was a playful little boy who just LOVED music...thank God he made it to the "mountaintop".  Rest in peace, old friend.  We love you.
