Billie Joe Armstrong, Movie Star: Green Day Singer to Act in American Idiot Film

Categories: Film

Billie Joe Armstrong
First it was an album. Then it was a musical at Berkeley Rep. Then it was a Broadway musical. Soon, Green Day's American Idiot will be a film. And no one other than Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong -- Rodeo native, ex-snotty Berkeley punk, and ridiculously talented songwriter -- will play St. Jimmy.

Armstrong also played the role on Broadway, but this will be his first onscreen performance. The film will be directed by Michael Mayer, who also helmed the stage version of American Idiot. Producing the play is Tom Hanks' Playtone Productions, which also was behind the Broadway-to-film smash Mamma Mia!

American Idiot is slated for a 2013 release. Here's a taste of the Broadway adaptation:

He'll be great....He's fearless and is known for his belief that taking risks is what keeps it all interesting.  He doesn't adhere to 'Gee, I'm not loyal" if Idon't.  stay in the confines of one art form or sound. If it works, good! He's got alot of pros guiding this (his) mission and he embodies the story and St. Jimmy character so who better to play the part!??
