It's Time for Thee Oh Sees' Annual New Record -- Except This Year, There'll Be Two

Categories: New Releases

Thee Oh Sees' new album, Castlemania, comes out June 14.

You sort of come to expect a new LP annually from San Francisco's ultra-prolific garage-psych titans Thee Oh Sees, and this year will be no different: The band announced today that Castlemania will be out on In the Red on June 14. Head freak John Dwyer says in a press release that it even has something like a coherent theme: "It's shit I didn't realize while making it -- songs about bad things, packaged in a summery record about getting numb to life and its little pleasures as you take it for granted with age."

Sounds delightful, and if it's anything like the last Oh Sees releases -- 2010's Warm Slime sounded particularly deranged -- it should be almost as much a pleasure to listen to as it will be to see performed live. You can likely get a preview April 28, when Thee Oh Sees headline Cafe Du Nord. But be warned: Dwyer is labeling this a "mellow show." And knowing him, that could mean anything.

There's more Oh Sees news, too: Looks like 2011 will see not just one new record, but two. Dwyer says the band will have another full LP coming in the fall -- "maybe our best yet," he says -- and possibly more releases on his own Castle Face label. The band also just expanded into a five-piece, adding Lars Finberg, a multi-instrumentalist and singer known for his worth with Seattle's the Intelligence and A Frames.

Thee Oh Sees have already had quite an interesting year, being featured on the first-ever Bruise Cruise and playing knockout shows at SXSW. We look forward to more thrilling mayhem in 2011.
