|It's just Lumerians, the nice, mind-detonating men from across the Bay.|
No, this is not your father's psychedelic rock. This is Lumerians
, an Oakland five-piece whose name you may have seen on local bills; whose pounding debut album, Transmalinnia
; recently came on Knitting Factory Records
; and whose member Luis Vasquez does a leaner, meaner, much-heralded minimalist rock thing on his own under the name the Soft Moon
But anyway, Lumerians are a force -- live especially; the new album, while entrancing, captures some but not all of the obsessive linearity and pounding drive of the band's live show. Nonetheless, it's good local listening. For a sample, may we suggest you cop the dreamier-than-average "Atlanta Brook" after the jump?
It finds Lumerians in a slightly more pensive mood than usual, as if they're recoiled into the genie lamp or smoke ring or wherever they linger when they're not blaring keyboard notes at full mayhem for a pack of sweaties. Call this what you want -- psych, kraut, drone, Paisley Underground, whatever; you'll find plenty with which to cleave your consciousness in here, folks.
