I dunno, I liked their first album okay, I guess
Before he was immortalized in the name of the Bay Area record store chain and femininized in the name of a pro-Victorian cello-rock ensemble, Rasputin was just this dude, you know?

Or wait, we could take a different tack: before the distinction was subsumed by fixie-rocking freak-folkers and burly bourbon-slinging bartenders and other incarnations of the hated H-word, there was one beardo to rule them all: Rasputin.

As you can see, there are plenty of places to go with this. For instance: a songplay! From now until late April, Berkeley's rather hip Shotgun Players are mounting a pseudo-musical called (you guessed it) Beardo, about the life and times and facial grooming of (you guessed it again) Rasputin. The production features music composed by Dave Malloy, some sweet posters by R Black, and an unbelievably hirsute titular performance by none other than...

Hello again.

As you can see from this trailer for the last teamup between Malloy and playwright Jason Craig, Beowulf: A Thousand Years of Baggage, this won't be your daddy's taut Russophile political psychodrama:

Beardo runs until April 24th at the Shotgun Players' space on Ashby. More info at their website. Hat tip to Laughing Squid.
