Nate Dogg R.I.P.

If you came of age between 1995 and 2005, it's hard to imagine you're unfamiliar with the late, great Nate Dogg (government name Nathaniel Hale), who passed away yesterday at the age of 41 after struggling with strokes suffered in 2007 and 2008. In his prime, he cornered the market on crooned hip-hop hooks, establishing himself as a serious contender for G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time, fool!) status.

Nate Dogg's earliest notable appearance came on Dr. Dre's 1992 track "Deeez Nuuuts," then on Snoop Dogg's "Ain't No Fun," which slowly became a classic over the span of a decade. But it was the 1994 single "Regulate" with Warren G that turned Nate into a household name (and later spawned the G.O.A.T. Wikipedia entry).

Over the next decade, Nate Dogg laid down some of the most memorable choruses hip-hop has ever heard, working with the likes of not only Snoop and Warren G but also Dr. Dre, Tha Dogg Pound, Xzibit, 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Mos Def, Ludacris, and even Craig David.

And while his solo work was almost an afterthought to his career as a guest singer, he still managed a few memorable singles of his own, including 1998's "Nobody Does It Better." He also joined up with Snoop and Warren G in 2004 to form the super group 213, whose severely underrated album The Hard Way marked a return to form for all three artists.

Between 2007 and 2008, Nate suffered a series of debilitating strokes that rendered him quadriplegic and unable to function in a musical capacity. Little was heard from or about Nate after that, aside from a few blips here and there from his closest friends and collaborators.

Now Nate Dogg is somewhere better, entertaining those in the afterlife with beautiful hooks. R.I.P., Nate.

...and oh yeah, smoke weed every day.
