Brick and Mortar Music Hall Arrives Where Coda Jazz Supper Club Died

Well, the space has been reborn. It's now called Brick and Mortar Music Hall, and shows begin there tonight.

​The venue's first show -- as far as we can tell -- is a free performance by Breaking Bread, featuring members of local funk bands Vinyl and Monophonics. Breaking Bread will play again for free tomorrow night. On Saturday, the soul outfit Rayband performs for the insanely reasonable price of $6 adv/$10 door. None of the shows on the calendar look too pricey.

We're still looking for what's changed in the switchover from Coda to Brick and Mortar -- one of our correspondents says the sign still said Coda on a recent walk-by -- but the main thing, so far, is that it appears Brick and Mortar won't be serving food. Coda owner Bruce Hanson had said that keeping a kitchen open (and serving rather fancy food from it) was one of the main difficulties of Coda open. Hopefully the lack of restaurant grub will give Brick and Mortar a fighting chance at life. Coda lasted barely more than a year.
