Sometimes it's nice to see musicians focus on doing one thing well, instead of trying to do everything well. So we happily can forgive the basic production of this black-and-white video, as well as the track's lack of song-ness. This isn't really a song, afterall -- it's Nio Tha Gift and Souls of Mischief's Tajai freestyling over a beat by Hieroglyphics' resident DJ Toure. And accordingly, the clip, which you can viddy after the jump, is only sort of a music video. Basically it's just two dudes rapping really well (especially Tajai; we're not quite sold on Nio's skills yet). But hey, it's also two dudes rapping well. And let's hope that, in this world of Eminem throwing looks in iced tea commercials, widespread abuse of Autotune, and MCs who work more on Twitter than in the studio, merely rapping really well still counts for something.
It does. And we'd be remiss without also mentioning the skills of Toure, Hieroglyphics' resident DJ, who is stepping out on his own with the album Toure's Theory later this spring. As this track and years of Hieroglyphics tunes testify, the guy can sew a masterful beat. Nothing flashy, nothing unncessary, just hard-hitting, addictive rhythms with beefy bass. Like this:
