Beastie Boys' Mike D Starts a Second Career as -- a Wine Blogger?
When you're a central figure in one of the biggest hip-hop groups ever, what's the next, natural progression for your career? Wine blogging, of course! Beastie Boys' Mike D has started writing for the wine website James Suckling as a guest critic, dropping views on his favorite varietals in lieu of dropping lyrical science over a monster beat.
Being from the Bay Area, I think we can all appreciate good opinions on wine, even if they're laced with excessive music metaphors. Here's what Mike D thought of a 2006 Jean-Marc Morey Santenay La Comme Dessus:
The red Burgundy was really good actually, especially when you don't expect much out of a restaurant half bottle. I can't say the spicy cuisine did the wine any favors. But still, after properly cleansing the palate, this was surprisingly ready to rock -- ripe fruits, earthy notes, even a little bit of refined funk. Elegant and restrained with well-balanced tension.
Mike D was also sure to mention that The Beastie Boys are putting the finishing touches on their upcoming, Philippe Zdar-produced album Hot Sauce Committee Part 2, which may or may not pair nicely with the aforementioned bottle of grappa he reviewed.
