Everyone's favorite local vintage-pop poet/band, Sonny and the Sunsets, announced a new album and dropped a new song today. Hit after Hit will be out on Fat Possum -- the esteemed indie blues label singer-songwriter Sonny Smith joined last year -- on April 12. After the jump, we've got an MP3 for you of "I Wanna Do It," the first, bleakly bouncy new single off the album.
Instrumentally, "I Wanna Do It" feels very much in the vein of the band's past work: basically grainy, '50s-era guitar pop. The background "yeah yeahs" here give the whole thing kind of a bubblegum/girl-group flavor, but, like a lot of Smith's best work, this song is dark. The cheerful music contrasts with utterly morbid lyrics: "I'm gonna walk to the sea, I'm gonna jump right in/ I'm gonna swim until the light house dims," goes the first verse. And we'll let you figure out what "doing it" in the chorus entails.
