Metallica Plans New Record That's Not Actually a New Metallica Record

The latest less-than-clear-message from the Metallica camp: Cigar aficionado/lead guitarist Kirk Hammett has let slip that the band is planning to head back into the studio in May -- but not exactly to record a new Metallica record. Hammett said the new project will only take the band two weeks -- which, at least going by the pace previous Metallica releases, would be about the time Lars Ulrich needs to set up his drum kit.*

So ... what's going on?

Hammett's comments mystified Rolling Stone, too, and it's not hard to see why: "We had planned on doing it in March, but we pushed it back to May. I don't want to give too much away, but it's not really 100 percent a Metallica record. It's a recording project, let's put it that way," he told the magazine. "Without getting too deep into it, it's more a recording project than a bona fide Metallica album. Whether or not we can pull it off in just two weeks remains to be seen."

So what's the band working on now? An album of chillwave covers? An epic love song dedicated to Dave Mustaine? A Rod Stewart-style Great American Songbook record? A Lars'-drums-only EP?

We have no idea, but we're pulling for either 1) An album of classic punk rock covers recorded live in the studio with German vocals (Metallica Plays the Cramps Auf Deutsch, maybe); or 2) A balls-out extended jam-cover of "Pirate Jenny" from The Threepenny Opera, featuring either Amanda Palmer, Nicki Minaj, or both. Neither of these seem extremely likely, but one can hope, can we?

Hopefully, they record like a "new" Kill 'Em All. Just like Halo's new Combat Evolved, A New Kill 'Em All or Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets.

On one hand, a release of an improved version of St. Anger would be sick, but i think it's too cool to be true, it just doesnt seems realistic... On the other one, a new covers album would be my fav option cuz i love the way the "Metallize" their fav songs, but we can't ignore a 3rd option: the possibility of doing an album covering some songs from that band called MetallicA... yes, as they did in the Bridge School Benefict acoustic concert around 2006, where they played some Garbage, Dire Straits etc etc covers, The Unforgiven & NEM acoustically, but especially they played Disp Heroes & All Within My Hands in a completely awesome new way, maybe they could choose that direction for their next "recording project", we will know soon...
