DJ Woolfy: Even Coconut Bra Surprises Can't Stop Him

Categories: Hey, DJ!

The hairy beast himself.
Back in 1994, then 19-year-old Woolfy already knew DJing was his destiny. Sneaking into infamous parties like Flammable Liquid and Does Your Mama Know in downtown Los Angeles, he discovered his affinity for house music. Seeing through his young eyes that DJs were the deities of their respective parties, he decided he needed to reach that pinnacle as well. Hitting up local record shops, Woolfy bought two Technics turntables and a lightning bolt, and the rest is history. Now, 17 years later, with releases on labels like Breakestra/Orgone, Rong Records, and DFA, his sound and personality is the perfect mix of dirty disco, English funk, and lots of whiskey. Catch him this Friday playing the acclaimed FACE party at SOM.

Why did you settle into the name Woolfy?

Well, nothing's written in stone. But like most people after a few bevies, the beast tends to come out. So in order to live up to my reputation, I had to drink more and more, now it's just a way of life. Sounds like a bad vampire tale. Nowadays, people like to say, "Here comes that hairy drunk." Hmm, maybe I got the name because I'm a hairy Scotsman. Wow ... what an awakening! I need a drink.

What's the strangest way someone has played on your name?

An obvious one was "Dances with Woolfy;" there was another time someone photoshopped my face on to the body of a majestic wolf, you know, like an American Indian spiritual painting. While I was quite flattered, the photoshop job was terrible and I wouldn't want to ever see a creature like that again. My favorite's "Woolf-lay me real good."

By the way, what do you think of the werewolf craze right now?

I didn't know there was one, but if there's a bandwagon, put me on it. I'm never really up on current events; I prefer to spend my time mauling baby bunnies. I've heard of Wolf and Lamb and just picked up a couple of their 12's which I like very much, but feel sorry for Lamb. Who knows, maybe there will be a Lamb wagon in the near future.

Speaking of duos, what's your favorite part about collaborating with Dan Hastie, whom you've worked with for music endeavors like Projections and Sounds from the Ward?

Other than the fact that he's the man, lots. Dan and I have been working together for twelve years and I can't say enough about his talents on the keyboards. But all in all, he's just a good mate who's got my back and that's the best part of collaborating. Now if he would just quit that damn band Orgone, we could get back on the road together. By the way, they're killing it right now.

Since you've released tracks on a prolific amount of labels, what's something consistent you've kept with each release?

They all say Woolfy on the cover.

What's the weirdest request you've ever gotten?

I was down if Australia and walked into a "tropical disco party" and a lovely girl walked up and put a coconut bra on me. She said, "You have to wear this tonight." I was like, "Really? There's no other lads here with a coconut bra on," but, keeping an open mind and considering it was a "tropical disco party," I politely obliged. One thing led to another and during my set I got a little too faded. Went to the bathroom to splash some water on my face and could not remember why there was a set of coconuts below my chin with thoughts of "Who the fuck did this to me, what the fuck is this?" So as the record was running out, I tore my shirt off, put the bra back on and finished my set ... enough said.

You recently released "Looking Glass," a hauntingly dreamy track. What was the inspiration behind this?

The moment in time when two people eye's meet and within that moment they spend a lifetime together, but like all connections someone is left looking last .

The video seems like a pleasant orgy of neon colors and expressions. What was the concept behind it?

We had originally shot a video with the band in it, and the guys over at DFA were hysterically brutally honest in saying, "You look like an irrelevant band from Siberia in the mid '80s." I'm so thankful it never came out. The new video is a much better fit and a pleasure to look at.

With all these huge music festivals like Coachella, SXSW, Winter Music Conference, which one would you ideally play at and why?

Definitely Coachella; it's the only one that pays.

And if there are three words someone should walk away thinking after your set in San Francisco this Friday, what would they be?

Where's my panties?
