There Are Only Three SF Bands on the 2011 SXSW List So Far -- And You've Probably Heard All of Them

Put this in your still-illicit pipe and smoke it: The early list of bands invited to perform at SXSW 2011 came out this week, and San Francisco's music scene isn't well represented.
There are only three S.F. artists invited so far -- John Vanderslice, Dredg, and Mark Eitzel.
All of them are already pretty well-established. John Vanderslice's records have been praised by national magazines like Esquire and Entertainment Weekly, he owns a well-known local recording studio, and he's on the advisory board of the Bay Bridged. Dredg gets played on corporate radio and has put out records for Universal and Interscope. Mark Eitzel, best known for his work with American Music Club, has been around for years.
Nothing against any of those folks, but surely there are newer, less-known locals worthy of a showcase at South-by. And there likely will be more S.F. bands included in the final lineup.
But locals, take heart: The deadline to apply for an SXSW showcase is tomorrow (Nov. 5). Purview some tips on how to make your band look good to the judges. After the jump, we'll compare just how many bands places like Brooklyn, L.A. and Spain have on this early list.
The SXSW 2011 Early List By the Numbers:
S.F. bands: 3 (John Vanderslice, Mark Eitzel, Dredg)
L.A./So-Cal bands: 5, or 6 if you count San Diego. (Ancestors, Apex Manor, Black Math Horseman, Calder Quartet, and Nite Jewel. The San Diego band is In Fear And Faith)
Portland bands: 2 (Starfucker, Wild Flag)
Seattle bands: 2 (The Head and the Heart, Telekinesis)
Brooklyn bands: 6 (A Place To Bury Strangers, Asobi Seksu, Naam, Parts & Labor, Shilpa Ray & Her Happy Hookers, Small Black.)
There are also 24 English bands, four Spanish bands, two German bands, and three bands from New Zealand.
Three bands from New Zealand, and three bands from S.F., all of them fairly well-known?
We're hoping this is because all you exciting local up-and-comers just haven't gotten your shit together yet.
