Cow Palace Says No to Subsonic Spookfest, Pop Raves

You'll have to take your glow sticks somewhere else, raver kids: the Cow Palace in Daly City won't be hosting any more Subsonic Spookfests or Pop 2010 parties.
The board of directors that controls the state-owned arena voted yesterday to specifically ban those events, after two died of ecstasy overdoses at the Pop 2010 The Dream party in May, and 17 were hospitalized with in drug and alcohol-related injuries at the Subsonic Spookfest last month.
Joe Barkett, chief executive officer of the arena, told the S.F. Chronicle that the decision wasn't related to a lack of security or medical personnel at the events. "In fact, it was just the opposite," he said, indicating the decision was tied solely to the injuries at this year's events.
At Pop 2010 in May, two died of ecstasy overdoses -- taking too much of the drug while dancing in a hot room without drinking water -- and at least six others required treatment. About 16,000 people attended the event.
Live 105's Subsonic Spookfest saw similar attendance numbers, and 17 were hospitalized with drug and alcohol issues. The injuries saw local politicians calling for more control over the venue, which is just across Geneva Ave. from San Francisco.
It's unclear where future Subsonic Spookfests will be held, assuming the annual Halloween dance party will continue. A spokesperson for Live Nation, which promotes Subsonic Spookfest along with Live 105, hasn't yet returned our request for comment.
