When will shoegaze go out of fashion? If bands like San Francisco's Weekend keep making songs like "Coma Summer," not for a while. Like the pioneers of the genre, My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus and Mary Chain, Weekend bury its vulnerability and its hooks in barbed-wire blankets of feedback and noise. And also like those bands, the resulting racket contradicts itself -- it's smooth, biting, dense, graceful, and anarchic. Pop hooks surface out of the waterfall of sound, then are consumed by halos of feedback. Those tensions are everything -- Weekend gets that. Which is why we're looking forward to Sports, the debut from this S.F. trio, which comes out on Slumberland records Nov. 9.
