Exclusive DJ Mix: K Avalon Gets Wild

K Avalon
San Francisco is brimming with bright, young talent precociously teetering on the edge of social obscurity and becoming your new favorite DJ/producer/party-starter. One such up-and-comer is recent Arizona import Kahley Emerson, or -- as she's referred to on the flier for Zoology, her new tropical dance party at Underground SF -- K Avalon. Rather than gab your ear off with needless particulars, we're going to allow the DJ and her musical choices to do the talking before Zoology launches this Wednesday. Maybe this will finally usher in the summer San Francisco has been waiting for.

John Talabot "Matilda's Dream"

My two favorite types of music to DJ are tropical dance and dark disco-house. Talabot must've known my dilemma when he dropped this slick track, which doesn't force me to choose between the two.

David Heartbreak "Moombahma (Munchi Edit)"

[I'm a] huge fan of Moombahton, the spanking-new genre born from slowed-down and sexified Dutch house. Especially when they get all spacey with shakers or maracas sprinkled in.

Los Destellos "Elsa (Sonido Martines Remix) [feat. Fefe]"

Originally made in the 60's, this track seems to perfectly sum up my 2010 summer. But only because I haven't spent it all in this foggy town.

Teengirl Fantasy "Azz Klapz"

I love the hyper-sampled, hodgepodge-of-a-grooveline here. Hadn't heard about these guys before I was totally impressed by their set at Popscene a couple months ago. Definitely catch em when they come back through SF!

Debonair Samir "Samir's Theme (Edit)"

I can't help personifying this track as the vuvuzela's younger, hotter, party-animal cousin from Baltimore.

Demarco "She Can't Wait"

Totally infectious, auto-tuned-to-perfection vocals and constantly climaxing chord progressions. This track makes all the girls dance --  and ladies dancing = packed dancefloor.

Feist vs. Boys Noize "My o My man (Toy Selectah Raverton Refix)"

Not often do you come across a fabulous bootleg of a remix of a nearly-perfect-on-its-own pop song. Leave it to the tropical remix king himself, Toy Selectah, to deliver.

Sleigh Bells "Rachel (K Avalon Tropical Remix)"

I think Derek Miller has got some of best guitar riffs and licks in popular music since Jack White went crazy. I just couldn't help dance-ifying the only track without a kickdrum.
