Solar Bears
New artists and musicians constantly bubble up on the electronic music radar. Not that that can't be said about nearly all musical genres, but it seems with electronic music, the ease with which people can make music via software, sampling, and a bit of creativity contributes to the overwhelming amount of debuts coming from new acts. The music press contributes to this, too -- many publications only care about what's trendy and 'buzz-worthy'. All of that being said, once in a while, a fresh name being touted by the music press can warrant more than just a cursory glance. I'm talking about Dublin's Solar Bears.

Solar Bears is something of an anomaly compared to your average production outfits. The duo is a relatively mellow act, and yet they are signed to Planet Mu, a record label known primarily for grating leftfield electronic music. They have a sound that exists somewhere between Boards of Canada's hazy, psychedelic beat compositions and Mogwai's visceral instrumental post-rock -- opening up the potential for them to garner a wide range of fans. Solar Bears' first album, She Was Coloured In, will be available September 20, but before that, a couple of videos have been shared for songs from the album. The shimmering lo-fi imagery fits well alongside the duo's analog synth melodies, orchestral washes, and other live instrumentation. The video for the title track of Solar Bears' debut is above, and one for the song "Children of the Times" is below.
