You remember Cornershop, don't you? "Brimful of Asha," and all that? Indian-influenced/descended Brits doling out pleasantly funky Britpop/dance-twee/multi-culti grooves? Pretty much inescapable on late-'90s radio?
So what if When I Was Born For The 7th Time came out in -- *shudder* -- 1997? It brought listeners and critics to their knees (joyfully), and for good reason. This fall, Cornershop is coming back to the U.S. for the first time in eight years, and its North American tour will thankfully include a stop at our very own Independent on November 14. Tickets will go on sale next month.
Cornershop is touring behind its current album, Judy Sucks A Lemon For Breakfast, which Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore has apparently called "the last great British album." We wouldn't go that far, but it's certainly worth a spin. The band also releases a single tomorrow that consists of a new song, "In June," with Japanese artist Matsuki Ayumu on vocals, as well as Ayumu's remix of "Who Fingered Rock n' Roll," a rockin' track off the newest Cornershop record. Check out videos for those tunes after the jump, and start getting excited for the band's S.F. show.
