SFinExile Spoken-Word Series

The Garage

6:30 p.m., $10-$20

Spike Lee's senior thesis at Tisch School of the Arts was a short film called Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads. Some guy named Ang Lee (no relation, as far as we know) was the assistant director, and it's endlessly fascinating that for Spike Lee's very first time out, he wanted to be in a barbershop. Several other films set in barbershops followed, including of course, Barbershop and Barbershop 2. Local writer Marlo Gayle was inspired by childhood memories to create "We Are Who We Say We Are: The Barbershop Stories" as part of the SFinExile Spoken-Word Series. "Back in the day, my dad would take me to a barber to get my hair cut," he writes. "The barbershop was full of people telling stories." By way of queering the situation, a lot, Gayle invites local writers including Nico Dacumos, Queen Jasmine, and Manish Vaidya to contribute their own oral histories. (Heh. We said "oral.")
