Free MP3: AB & the Sea Cover Katy Perry's 'California Gurls'
| A B & The Sea performing at the All Shook Down Music Festival |
In our video interview at Sunday's All Shook Down Music Festival, A B & the Sea singer-guitarist Koley O'Brien broke the news that his impressive indie-pop outfit has put together a cover of Katy Perry's "Califorina Gurls". Leaving aside for a moment arguments about whether Perry's voluptuous hit is the "summer jam" of 2010 (blech) -- and the song's one-sided view of California -- A B & the Sea have made a clever move here.
So now we have the track itself -- download it for free after the jump -- which, as you might guess, sounds like a folkier, warmer, less frisky take on the original. There's no confusing the two, especially not since A B & the Sea throw in an ode to the original "California Girls" (you know, the Beach Boys version) about two-thirds of the way through. But all the basic elements of Perry's track are there -- including the "melt your popsicle" lyric -- albeit in far less obnoxious form.
