The nonprofit SFJAZZ announced its lineup today for the 28th annual San Francisco Jazz Festival, which runs from September 14 to November 20. Tickets go on sale Sunday, July 11, and prices vary for each concert. Highlights include:

  • Taj Mahal, Toumani Diabaté, and Vieux Farka Touré (October 23): The three artists perform the same night, fusing blues and world music to celebrate Vieux Farka Touré's father, Ali Farka Touré, the famous Malian guitarist. Taj Mahal's career has spanned more than 40 years and has veered from blues to experimental. Toumani Diabaté is a celebrated player of the kora (a 21-stringed, lute-like instrument) from Mali. Vieux Farka Touré, like his father, is a renowned guitarist.

  • Ravi Shankar and Anoushka Shankar (October 27): Ravi Shankar has been at the forefront of Indian music for decades. He mainstreamed classical Indian music and the sitar by touring North America and collaborating with artists such as the Beatles' George Harrison. Now 90, he plays with his 29-year-old daughter, Anoushka, who learned the sitar from her father and is a Grammy-nominated artist.

  • Arturo Sandoval (October 29): Arturo Sandoval is an accomplished Cuban trumpet and piano player who cut his teeth playing with Dizzy Gillespie. Long a proponent of mixing Latin and Cuban influences with jazz , Sandoval was voted Cuba's best instrumentalist for eight years in a row.

  • Bitches Brew Revisited (October 29):  Bitches Brew Revisited is a group project that explores jazz legend Miles Davis' wildly experimental 1970 album, Bitches Brew, pulling music from it and other jazz greats in honor of the album's 40th anniversary this year.
