The Hold Steady @ The Fillmore
"We're good guys, but we can't be good every night," run the lyrics to "Our Whole Lives" from the Hold Steady's new album, Heaven Is Whenever. The band has yet to prove that theory, and here's hoping it never does. Five years ago, they moaned, "Lord to be 33 forever," and last year's tour snapshot, A Positive Rage, helped their case that they can stay 33 as long as they can still tune up. The unfortunate recent excision of secret weapon Franz Nicolay on keyboards means fans will have to shout along harder to the blocky stuff like "The Swish" and "Constructive Summer" to disguise the (presumed) absence of the part in "Chips Ahoy!" where the bridge turns into Yes' "Roundabout."
The Hold Steady performs tonight at the Fillmore (8 p.m., $25).
