You can plaster San Francisco with all kinds of (fitting) labels: It's a Culinary Town. It's a Gay Town. It's a Literary Town. And it's definitely a Bike Town. So Bike to Work Day is always a big deal, but this year is special. Cyclists finally saw long-awaited improvements to their commutes: Much-needed new bike lanes have been laid down. A whole swath of Market Street is devoted to cycle traffic on weekday mornings. And the city approved plans to improve the traffic flow around the cheap gas station on Fell Street that has motorists clogging up the heavily used bike lane. The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition helps cyclists celebrate these innovations all day with energizer stations dispensing free goodies, snacks, and coffee; bike "doctors" to help with cranky machines; and free valet bike parking downtown. And because one can't live on skinny pants and spandex alone, the day ends with the Bike Away from Work Party and Fashion Show. Bike enthusiasts can bump and grind away the daily grind, perhaps win one of the many raffle prizes offered, and celebrate the dawning of another day to bike to work. (Rickshaw Stop, 6-10 p.m., Free to members & you can join at the door, $10 for non-members).
