Free DJ Mix From Gavin Russom
![]() |
Globe-trotting artist and performer Gavin Russom has an insatiable hunger for music. In addition to making his own synthesizers and starring in stage shows, he has produced tunes under his own name and a few other monikers--most recently as The Crystal Ark--for over a decade. Russom's trademarks include slow-burning, disco-tinged beats and homemade analog synth sounds, instantly recognizable regardless of the name he's recording under. Recently, the longstanding DFA Records DJ/producer pieced together an awesome mixtape for FACT magazine, and you'd be smart not to let it pass you by.
FACT Mix 142 offers ten songs spread out over 50 minutes. His mix starts out with a rewinding sound effect that could be an accidental glitch, but quickly fades into a film sample with Diamond Vampires' "Friday Nights" rising steadily below it. The track is strong, but still serves as an intro, as it's not until 12 minutes into the epic DJ set that a truly energetic beat drops. After the atmospheric flute music of Steven Halpern's "Dancing Through the Rainbow Pt. 1" has its time to shine, the pulsing beat of "Acid Cut Pt. 2" by Franco Cinelli takes Russom's mix to the next level, and the real party starts. Disparate styles like acid-house and new age music are juxtaposed throughout the mix. Russom's greatest strengths are evidenced in full on this FACT mix. He has a knack for finding hypnotic grooves that retain their freshness no matter how long they're played out.
