Note to the RIAA: These puppies are not gonna save you
When will the RIAA learn to work with file-sharing technology, instead of playing Whac-a-Mole against sites aiming to create business models that will get artists paid? CNET reports that the RIAA won its lawsuit against file-sharing site LimeWire for copyright infringement. LimeWire is one of the most popular destinations in the business, attracting 58 percent of the downloading demographic. But rather than simply giving away free music, the site has been trying to work with the labels to create revenue that benefits the musicians.

The reality is that file-sharing is going to continue to spread: since the RIAA crushed Napster, it's only gotten easier to take music for free online. Wouldn't it be smarter for the major labels to find  a way to work with this technology, rather than against it? (Especially in light of studies like this one, which argue that lack of innovation is holding labels back monetarily more than file-sharing). I agree that musicians should be compensated for the music they've created, but it's not like the tools that facilitate an easy online grab are going to fade away. They're just going to head further underground, with far less interest (i.e. no interest) than LimeWire in working with the labels.
