Kyle Kurpinski and Terry D. Johnson @ Booksmith

How to Defeat Your Own Clone: And Other Tips for Surviving the Biotech Revolution
author Kyle Kurpinski didn't get lucky with a popular humor Tumblr, or a witty Twitter feed, or an auspicious Foursquare check-in near a HarperStudio book editor desperate for a kill. Last May, he published "The effect of fiber alignment and heparin coating on cell infiltration into nanofibrous PLLA scaffolds." The How to Defeat Your Own Clone author, along with his co-author Terry D. Johnson, are real superbad scientists, the kind that release papers like "TGF-beta and Notch Signaling Mediate Stem Cell Differentiation into Smooth Muscle Cells" (Kurpinski, Feb. 9, 2010) and teach bioengineering at UC Berkeley (Johnson, present day). This puts them at the forefront of a brave new humor writing world: A place where "We were promised flying cars!" is not the punchline but the set up, and every bit therein - on bioenhancements, mutated food, DNA sequencing, human cloning, and more - practices good, witty science.

Their free reading is tonight at Booksmith, 7:30 p.m.
