What To Do? Monday's Pick: MGMT
MGMT's Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden willed themselves to fame with "Time to Pretend," the biggest movie-trailer indie crossover hit since "Paper Planes." Now they want us to know that they can play with that popularity. The chewy new Congratulations isn't at all bad, despite their vehement desire to release zero singles. Contributing to the Flaming Lips' cyclonic Embryonic last year has had positive effects on the pair's ability to sustain and sweep, and opening for Beck has boosted MGMT's confidence as well. The duo wants us to know that "Time to Pretend" and "Kids" were "Creep" and "Loser," not "Tubthumping" and "The Freshmen." Maybe they can prove synth-psychedelia and initialized band names can outlive short attention spans after all when MGMT performs tonight and tomorrow night at the Fillmore at 7 p.m. Advanced tickets have sold out.
