Weekend Party Preview: Blondes Have Fun, Buttons Get Depressed
|Jokers of the Scene|
This week's offerings focus mostly on contemporary electro. Not straight-up electro, but permutations of the style as buzzing rave music, groovy techno beats, revivalist acid-house, and updated disco beats. No matter what you want to call it, we'll just say it's dance music--and isn't that what we're all here for?
Friday, April 23
What: Depressed Buttons, Jokers of the Scene, Franki Chan, and more
Where: 330 Ritch
When: 9:00 p.m. - 2:00 a.m.
Why: Where do you go after you've fulfilled your dreams of becoming a hugely-popular indie dance outfit? You could always start a Euro-friendly DJ/production team. That's precisely what Clark Baechle, Todd Fink, and Jacob Thiele did. The three Omaha-based bandmates upped the distorted synths and head-knocking dance beats of their previous gig, The Faint, for a new dance project called Depressed Buttons. There isn't much music to hear from the act online, but we'd wager Depressed Buttons bring it like The Faint conducting a rave----especially because the trio is playing with Fool's Gold club-lovers Jokers of the Scene and IHEARTCOMIX label head Franki Chan.
Saturday, April 24
What: Lights Down Low w/ Felix Cartal, Christian Martin, and more
Where: Triple Crown
When: 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 a.m.
Why: Felix Cartal and Christian Martin represent two sides of the dance music coin. On one side, you have the distorted, hyperactive tendencies of Canada's Cartal pushing you to dance dance dance dance. On the other is Martin, whose smoother approach to production and DJing is more like a warm bath--slowly coaxing you onto the dancefloor before he turns up the heat. Both are worth their weight in Serrato vinyl. The night will be rounded out with DJing by locals Sleazemore, Alexander Frederick, and Konnect.
