This weekend is shaping up to be a real doozy. On tap: a birthday, free ice cream, and plenty of new music to shake your ass to. Whether you want to spend your evenings with the underground stars of dubstep or just your favorite local DJs, below are the gigs you'd be smart not to miss.
Friday, April 16
What: The Leak w/ Sam FM, Pony P, Kirin Rider, Kool Karlo, and more
Where: The Showdown
When: 10 p.m. - 2 a.m.
Why: Plenty of local club promoters are slaves to nostalgia, but not the folks behind The Leak. The large group of resident DJs dedicate their night at Sixth & Market's premier refurbished watering hole, The Showdown, to only the newest of the new. Every month Sam FM, Roost Uno, and co. bring in the hottest unreleased and unheard beats and bangers--enlightening your musical mind while you sip on $5 cocktails all night long. And keep your eyes peeled, The LOWSF crew warned us, "Next month we plan on trashing this whole piece of history and bringing in an entirely different animal."
Saturday, April 17
What: The Ice Cream Social w/ Glass Actor, LOL Boys
Where: 222 Hyde
When: 10 p.m. - 2 a.m.
Why: One of the newer events to hit our city's choice hole in the wall-cum-basement dancefloor, 222 Hyde, The Ice Cream Social is a relatively novel idea. Every month DJs and producers rally alongside residents Sleazemore and Shane King for a night of dirty dance beats--and, at this party, free ice cream. And not just any ol' Häagen-Dazs, this is premium, homemade stuff. This month, along with slow burning dance tunes Glass Actor (Greg from Acid Girls' solo project) and L.A's LOL Boys, The Social will treat you to some avocado ice cream.
